3/26/2008 Mailinator

Have you ever been to a web site that required you to enter a e-mail so that you could get log in credentials? But you just did not want to put in your e-mail because you knew they were going to spam you. I use to use DodgeIt.com, then they switched to DodgIt.com but the web site has been pretty flaky lately and isn't always up. But I have found an alternative. It's called Mailinator and does the same basic thing as DodgeIt did.

What Mailinator does, for those of you who are not familiar with DodgeIt, is creates a temporary inbox for what ever e-mail you want. So when you are at a web site that requires an e-mail verification (DO NOT DO THIS IF THEY SEND YOU A PASSWORD), simply make something up like iAmTheCoolestGuy@mailinator.com then go to Mailinator.com and enter that e-mail into the “Check Inbox” and you have your e-mail with the verification link. There is no need to create the e-mail ahead of time, it will already have been created for you and waiting for you.

There are a couple things to keep in mind while using this service.

  • Anyone can view the same inbox as you, there is no password protection. Do not have e-mails sent there that need to remain private such as passwords, bank info, etc.
  • The e-mail is only around for a few hours. This is obviously because otherwise their servers with be constantly filled with junk e-mail, rendering the service useless.
  • It will remove any attachments in the e-mail. This again saves hard drive space as well as keeping their servers and your computer clean from viruses.
